Outdoor Recreation

Have a Big Day Out

Nestled atop a Missouri River Bluff in rural Southeast South Dakota, Vermillion is home to some of the best outdoor recreation in the state. Fish, hunt, hike, and bike to your heart’s content in our natural spaces.

Hike Spirit Mound

Rising from the prairie to the north of Vermillion is Spirit Mound, a confirmed stopping point on the Lewis & Clark Expedition. Head north on Highway 19 until you reach the Spirit Mound Historic Prairie—then it's just a short hike up to the summit, where you'll find stunning views of the Great Plains all around.

Canoe & Kayak the Missouri

The Missouri National Recreational River is only a 15-minute drive from Vermillion, and it’s a great place for experienced paddlers to get out on the water. Head down to Clay County Park, where you’ll find an excellent spot to launch your canoe or kayak. Make sure to wear your safety gear, as the river’s currents are quite strong!

Hunt & Fish

South Dakota is renowned world-wide for its pheasant hunting and a large number of other game and fowl. The terrain near and around Vermillion makes it a prime spot for all kinds of hunting. And, with over 175 lakes in the region and a fishing season that never closes, anglers can have a heyday catching walleye, bass, pike, bluegill, and perch.

Disc Golf

Fan of disc golf? Vermillion offers a couple of courses for beginners and experts alike. Head down to Barstow Park on Cherry Street to enjoy the 10-basket course. You can also play a round at Prentis Park on Clark St. (also 10 baskets) and enjoy time outside with friends and family.

Swim

Don’t forget to bring a swimsuit with you if you come to visit during the summer months! Vermillion’s state-of-the-art water park, Prentis Plunge, is something you won’t want to miss. The heated pool features a lazy river, slides, splash pad, lap swim, concession stand, and plenty of lounge chairs for you to enjoy. Daily admission is $6 for those 7 years and up and free for ages 0-6 with a paid adult.

Golf

Want to practice your swing? Pack your clubs and head to the Bluffs Golf Course, an upscale 18-hole championship golf course on the beautiful Missouri River Bluffs. The course is a favorite destination point for golfers of all skill levels. Carved from the natural topography of the region, the Par 72 layout tests golfers from the beginning with water on 5 of the first 6 holes.
